When the sun went down, the moon came up. She was round and gentle and she had a job to do.
She had to tuck in the town.
First she looked at the roofs. Roof after roof after roof, all in a row. She laid a little silver light on each one, like a blanket.
Then she looked at the windows. Some windows were dark already, and some still had a little glow. She made each one shimmer, soft and slow.
Then she looked at the street. The street was long and quiet. She spread her light all the way down, from the first lamp to the last.
Then she looked at the park. The swings were still. The slide was still. The slide said, "Shhh," in a slide sort of way.
The moon looked at the pond. A duck was tucked up on the bank with her head under her wing. The moon made a silver path across the water, so the ducks would have something pretty to dream about.
Last of all, the moon looked at the little house at the end of the street. In one small window, a child was looking back.
"Goodnight, moon," said the child.
The moon smiled her biggest smile.
Then the child's eyes got heavy, and the moon watched, and the town was all tucked in.
