Little Bear was ready for bed, but first, he had some goodnights to say.
"Goodnight, cave," said Little Bear. The cave said nothing back, but it felt warm and round, like a hug.
"Goodnight, pebble." Little Bear had a smooth grey pebble, and he set it down by his paw.
"Goodnight, moon." The moon was peeking in through the door, round and white and very quiet.
"Goodnight, wind." The wind went whoosh, whoosh, softly, and then it went still.
"Goodnight, snowflake." One small snowflake landed on his nose. Little Bear giggled, and it melted away.
"Goodnight, Mama."
Mama Bear was big and warm and smelled of pine needles. She curled her great arm around him, and Little Bear snuggled into the fur.
"Goodnight, Little Bear," she whispered. "I'm right here."
Little Bear yawned a very big yawn. He yawned so big that his eyes closed all by themselves.
"Goodnight, me," he said.
And he was asleep.
