Up in a big grey cloud, a little snowflake was getting sleepy.
"Time to go down," said the cloud.
The snowflake let go. Down she drifted, down, down, down. She did not fall fast. She floated, like a feather.
She floated past a tall fir tree. "Hello," said the tree. "Not here," said the snowflake, "I am looking for somewhere soft."
She floated past a red mailbox. "Hello," said the mailbox. "Not here," said the snowflake, "I am looking for somewhere soft."
She floated past a snowman with a carrot nose. "Hello," said the snowman. "Not here," said the snowflake, "I am looking for somewhere soft."
Then she saw a little hill, covered in other snowflakes, all piled up like a pillow.
That looked soft.
She landed, plop, as light as a whisper. She sank right in, and all the other snowflakes made room.
It was cold outside, but it was snug there, in the middle of the hill.
"Goodnight," said the snowflake.
"Goodnight," said all the other snowflakes together, very quietly.
And the snow kept on falling, softly, all night long, tucking in the world.
